How it works
Enter your race distance, target finish time, and split distance. The calculator divides your target time evenly across each split, or applies a negative split strategy where pace gradually increases through the race. Use this to print or memorise your target splits before race day.
Frequently asked questions
What split distance should I use?
For a 5K, 1 km splits give you 5 clear checkpoints. For a 10K, 1 km or 2 km splits work well. For a half marathon or marathon, 5 km splits are practical — you will pass a timing mat roughly every 5 km in most races.
What is even splits pacing?
Even splits means running every kilometre at exactly the same pace. It is one of the most efficient strategies for most runners — it conserves energy evenly and avoids the crash that comes from starting too fast.
Should I aim for a negative split?
A 1–3% negative split (second half slightly faster) is associated with better overall performance in research. It requires discipline in the first half — most runners naturally want to start faster. A GPS watch with pace alerts helps.
