GPS watch questions answered
What GPS watch is best for a beginner runner?
The Garmin Forerunner 255 is the best starting point for most runners. It provides accurate GPS tracking, heart rate monitoring, training load analysis, and 14-day battery life at a fair price. You won't outgrow it quickly - the running metrics are the same as Garmin's more expensive models.
How accurate are GPS running watches?
Modern GPS watches are accurate to within 1–2% for distance on open roads. Accuracy decreases under tree cover, in urban canyons, or on tight corners. Watches with multi-band GPS (like the Forerunner 255 and 265) are significantly more accurate in challenging environments.
Do I need a GPS watch or will my phone do?
Your phone works for basic tracking, but a dedicated watch is better in almost every way that matters for training: it's on your wrist (no armband), battery is not shared with your phone, heart rate is more reliable from a wrist optical sensor during exercise, and the data feeds directly into training analysis tools.
How long does GPS watch battery last?
It varies considerably by model and GPS mode. Entry-level watches like the Forerunner 255 last around 30 hours in GPS mode. Premium models like the Fenix 7 can last 57+ hours. Battery life drops significantly with multi-band GPS, always-on displays, and music streaming.
